Are you anxious about dental treatment? Thousands of people have avoided urgent dental care because of fear. If you need help, we are here. Don’t put off treatment because of past experiences. We understand what it means to have a dental phobia and have helped many people overcome their fears through sedation dentistry.
You can experience dentistry comfortably without feeling pain or experiencing unpleasant sights, sounds, or smells with sedation dentistry. Whether you are afraid of the dentist, have a bad gag reflex, or hate needles, dentistry with sedation will ease your mind. There are several forms of sedation dentistry Dr. Johnson offers.
The deepest form of sedation Dr. Johnson performs is Intravenous Conscious Sedation (IV Sedation). Dr. Johnson has been performing IV sedation for over 10 years. It is fast acting, safe and the most effective way of eliminating fear and anxiety during a dental appointment. IV sedation creates a state of deep relaxation and calm. You will feel as though you were in a deep sleep, but will still be able to respond to requests from the dentist. You will not remember much (if anything at all) that takes place during the procedure. Time will appear to pass quickly and your appointment will be over before you know it.
Non-IV sedation is a lighter form of sedation referred to as "oral sedation" and is achieved by taking a small pill a short time before the appointment. We describe this form of sedation as more of an “anxiety control”. When combined with nitrous oxide the effect of this medication can be very similar to IV sedation, though for some patients, not as “deep”. Non-IV sedation offers a relaxed calming experience with little to no memory of the procedure. This works wonderfully for patients who are having lighter procedures done such as fillings and sometimes a crown.
Often referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation. It is ideal for a person who has a minor amount of anxiety. It "takes the edge off" calming ones nerves after a few breaths. When the nitrous oxide is no longer being administered you are back to normal and able to function as you did before you came to see us. It is often used during dental cleanings.
